wide compared with the length of the specimen, and so is the angle between the lateral edge of the kink band and the axis of extension, E = [sin xo/sin (xi + so) ] 1. (2) For narrow kink bands and deformation bands, (a) an approximate relation is s = cot (900 w); (b) a more precise relation where a and ,3 are the respective angles between the kink-band boundary and the active glide plane in the band and in the unstrained ends, s = cot a + cot fi. The validity of these equations has been tested against rotational and strain data for experimentally deformed crystals of calcite and dolomite. The above relations are based on the assumption that throughout progressive strain the boundary surface of a kink or deformation band is occupied by the same material particles and serves as a datum with reference to which the crystal lattice of the band may be considered to rotate about the intersection of the kink-band boundary surface and the glide plane T. By making a similar assumption with regard to a twin-lamella boundary in calcite, it is possible to explain complex rotational effects leading to simple geometric relations previously observed between a completely twinned crystal lattice and the completely twinned lattice of an enclosed rotated lamella.

Empirical Bayes Estimation in Nonstationary Markov chains
Estimation procedures for nonstationary Markov chains appear to be relatively sparse. This work introduces empirical Bayes estimators for the transition probability matrix of a finite nonstationary Markov chain. The data are assumed to be of a panel study type in which each data set consists of a sequence of observations on N>=2 independent and identically dis...
متن کاملEvaluation of First and Second Markov Chains Sensitivity and Specificity as Statistical Approach for Prediction of Sequences of Genes in Virus Double Strand DNA Genomes
Growing amount of information on biological sequences has made application of statistical approaches necessary for modeling and estimation of their functions. In this paper, sensitivity and specificity of the first and second Markov chains for prediction of genes was evaluated using the complete double stranded DNA virus. There were two approaches for prediction of each Markov Model parameter,...
متن کاملThe Rate of Rényi Entropy for Irreducible Markov Chains
In this paper, we obtain the Rényi entropy rate for irreducible-aperiodic Markov chains with countable state space, using the theory of countable nonnegative matrices. We also obtain the bound for the rate of Rényi entropy of an irreducible Markov chain. Finally, we show that the bound for the Rényi entropy rate is the Shannon entropy rate.
متن کاملStochastic Dynamic Programming with Markov Chains for Optimal Sustainable Control of the Forest Sector with Continuous Cover Forestry
We present a stochastic dynamic programming approach with Markov chains for optimal control of the forest sector. The forest is managed via continuous cover forestry and the complete system is sustainable. Forest industry production, logistic solutions and harvest levels are optimized based on the sequentially revealed states of the markets. Adaptive full system optimization is necessary for co...
متن کاملTaylor Expansion for the Entropy Rate of Hidden Markov Chains
We study the entropy rate of a hidden Markov process, defined by observing the output of a symmetric channel whose input is a first order Markov process. Although this definition is very simple, obtaining the exact amount of entropy rate in calculation is an open problem. We introduce some probability matrices based on Markov chain's and channel's parameters. Then, we try to obtain an estimate ...
متن کاملMeasure - Theoretic Boundaries of Markov Chains , 0 - 2 Laws And
The classic Poisson formula giving an integral representation of bounded harmonic functions in the unit disk in terms of its boundary values has a long history (as it follows from its very name). Given a Markov operator P on a state space X one can easily deene harmonic functions as invariant functions of the operator P, but in order to speak about their boundary values one needs a boundary, be...
